Even Collier’s advertisements emphasized aviation themes. On March 12, 1910, the A. P. Warner Instrument Company of Beloit, Wisconsin, announced that it would spend its advertising dollars to publicize aviation, and printed as its first insertion a scene from the aerial meet at Los Angeles. Warner Instruments’ advertisements continued for several subsequent issues, ensuring that the Warner Auto Meter and Warner Aero Meter came to the attention of flying enthusiasts. Even men’s haberdashery was impressed with an aeronautical stamp.

Rudyard Kipling’s novel, With the Night Mail, was published in London in 1905 and issued in an American edition in 1909. d. While Kipling emphasized that skill and daring would characterize the era of trans-Atlantic flight, he hastened to assure readers that aerial travel would be no more risky than a steamship crossing. ≤≤ H. G. Wells’s novel The War in the Air dealt with a more threatening scenario of airships as terrifying weapons of a new age. Written in 1907 for serialization in Pall Mall Magazine, the book received wide and immediate attention throughout Britain.
