The future Navy program of record system using UCAS technology is called UCLASS, which has not yet gone through source selection. The Navy caught up with UAS development with multiple programs. The Northrop Grumman FireScout unmanned helicopter development continues. Northrop Grumman won the Navy’s Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) program with a Global Hawk derivative. The Navy also employed small, fixed-wing Insitu ScanEagle UAS from ships under a services contract. Later, the larger Insitu Integrator won the Navy/ Marine Corps Small Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System (STUAS) competition, which provides long-duration, runway-independent ISR from land and ships.
Autonomous targeting and weapons delivery (no human in the loop) might be unethical. • Use of UAS for civil surveillance and law enforcement might violate civil liberties. 6 Brief History of Unmanned Aircraft It is difficult to appreciate the amazing UAS capabilities fully without understanding what came before. There have been numerous bursts of innovation and eras of widespread employment. There have also been long periods where the technologies were all but forgotten. Brilliant achievements have been followed by decades of dormancy.
Its mission was to carry torpedoes, sonobuoys, cameras, flares, cargo, and smoke generators from destroyers. Although widely deployed, it had limited effectiveness due to still immature technologies. Approximately 800 QH-50s were produced. The Lockheed D-21 was the most impressive system of the era. This Mach 3þ ramjet-powered UAS was air launched first from a modified A-12 (predecessor to the SR-71 Blackbird) and later from a B-52. This longrange platform was designed to fly preprogrammed missions autonomously.
